Sanctuary Europa
White‑Glove Relocation Strategy for US Founders and Families
Created and led by Carri Nicholson, The Leader Whisperer® – Founder & Principal, Growth Circles (un) Limited
Sanctuary Europa is a white‑glove relocation strategy and advisory service for US‑based founders, executives, and families who are exploring or executing a move to Europe or the UK/Scotland
Let’s start by being clear: we do not replace your immigration lawyer or tax advisor. We sit around them as your strategic partner – designing your overall relocation plan, comparing countries and visa routes, and coordinating vetted local specialists so your move is financially smart, legally robust, and actually liveable.
Our typical engagement: 6–12 months of strategic and practical support, on a fixed monthly retainer.
Who We Help
- US founders, consultants, and senior professionals who no longer feel safe or represented in the US.
- Couples and families who want a realistic “Escape Plan B” in Europe within 12–24 months.
- People who need to balance safety, quality of life, tax efficiency, and practical realities – not just “get a visa”.
What We Do (and What We Don’t)
We are not an immigration law firm or a tax practice. We are the strategic and orchestration layer around those specialists.
We help you:
- Compare European destinations and visa routes (e.g. Netherlands DAFT, Portugal D7, entrepreneur routes in UK/Spain/Germany) using hard data on timelines, tax, and quality of life.
- Design a jurisdiction‑specific business and relocation plan that supports visa sustainability and long‑term tax efficiency.
- Curate and coordinate independent in‑country experts: immigration lawyers, civil‑law notaries, accountants, wealth managers, real‑estate agents, education and relocation specialists.
- Orchestrate the practical move – flights, temporary housing, pets, removals, healthcare and schooling integration – so you land as smoothly as possible.
Your immigration and tax advisers remain in charge of the legal details.
We make sure their advice can be implemented coherently in real life, across multiple countries and service providers.
How We Work
- Exploration Call (no charge)
A 45–60 minute call to understand your situation, goals, and constraints. We’ll map your broad options and be honest if relocation is not the right move for you. - Strategy Phase
We compare your top 2–3 viable routes (for most US entrepreneurs, the Dutch DAFT/BV route is one of them) and recommend a preferred Plan A, with a built‑in Plan B where appropriate. - Implementation & Orchestration
We coordinate the work of your chosen immigration, tax, and local service providers, keep an eye on timelines, and help you make decisions without being overwhelmed. - Landing & Integration
We stay with you through arrival, early months, and key milestones (DAFT appointments, registration, business setup, housing), so you are not left to “figure it out” alone in a new system.
Why Clients Choose Sanctuary Europa
- Time and stress savings: Most DIY international relocations consume 270–410 hours of senior time. Working with us usually reduces that to around 20–30 hours of focused decision‑making.
- Better financial outcomes: In one recent case, a US couple pivoting from a failed UK route to a Dutch DAFT/BV structure achieved over €38,000 additional profit in Year 1 and €45,000–€60,000 over three years, with specialist tax validation.
- Risk management: We design Plan A, Plan B (and sometimes Plan C) so that when one system behaves unpredictably – as international visa systems sometimes do – your relocation ambitions do not collapse.
- Whole‑life focus: We care about the business plan and the spreadsheet, but also about your safety, identity, family needs, and the kind of life you want to live once you land.
Example: When Plan A Fails and Plan B Needs Rescuing
A US consultant couple in their 40s came to us wanting to emigrate to the UK – Scotland in particular – with a tight timeline to achieve this (not unworkable, but tight – and for understandable reasons.
We worked closely with them to develop a fully lawyer‑endorsed UK route and action plan: a Scottish Limited Liability company owned by one half of the couple, which would become the Sponsoring Organisation to allocate a Skilled Worker visa to the other half of the couple – who would then bring the business Founder over as their spouse.
All perfectly legal, and above board – and supported by the Scottish Government’s Migration Service.
We picked this route because speed was of the essence for them. The alternative – the Innovator Founder visa – would take nearly a year to put in place (with no guarantees of success), and they could always transition to this visa type over the first year.
At almost the last minute – and despite meeting published criteria and receiving strong professional endorsements – the key element that would support this route to the UK was refused late in the process by the UK Visa & Immigration Service, with no clear explanation.
We were pissed off. Our clients were extremely shaken and upset. Our business and legal connections in Scotland were incensed. But that didn’t matter: there is no right of appeal to these decisions, just a “try again in 6 months time”…
We didn’t have 6 months – we’d planned everything for a move at the beginning of November, and it was now late September.
So…
We rebuilt their strategy from the ground up, comparing the pros and cons of persisting with their first choice of Scotland with the Netherlands and other EU options. They ultimately pivoted to a Dutch DAFT/BV structure, and we helped them meet their deadline of leaving the US by November.
They landed in the Netherlands on November 1st – within just five weeks of the fateful decision – and are now running a lean, tax‑efficient consultancy from a gorgeous home we found for them just outside Amsterdam. And they have a clear path to long‑term residency which they will absolutely take up
